March 24, 1998 --- Freeport, Bahamas

Day Two dawns clear, but breezy. Off to a good start --- within 15 minutes we spot a couple of good bones; first cast, a fish takes. My line, however, is in a significant snarl. The fish holds for a moment or two while William feverishly attempts to unsnarl the mess --- but then the fish takes off. The snarl gets through the first couple of guides okay, but catches the top half of the rod, separating same from the bottom half. I'm now playing a hot six pound bonefish on a four and a half foot rod, with no tip top. Seeing as how this was my last nine weight rod, this is not a good situation. Eventually, however, we get the fish under control, the knot untangled, and the fish landed. I decline William's offer to hold the fish while I reload the camera; this snub of the fish gods (combined with the curse of the first cast fish) lead naturally to a day without landing another fish. There was some drama, though. I get shots at maybe eight or nine fish, including some good ones over at West End. I lose a couple on the take; get a solid hookup on another very good fish, he spits the hook at about two hundred yards. Reports from the rest of the crew at day's end indicate that not many fish were seen. One guy got a shot at a permit. Tough work casting into a brisk twenty knot wind --- can't reach fish sixty feet away :-(
