This bird was plucking fish from the water at a rate that would make a fisherman jealous. I guess when it comes to catching fish, it pays to have evolution on your side.
There was a huge blue heron in my back hayfield this a.m.strutting its stuff and cackling very loudly ! Because of the brownish colour, I didn't know what it was immediately. Thanks for the great photo it really helped.

I was travelling south of Amos Quebec in the fall of 2004 and say for my first time not one but 3 sepparate "seiges" of the Great Blue Heron. Each siege contained about 20 to 30 birds. OF course id di not have a camera at the time. I never knew that this ordinarilly secluded bird migrated as groups.
Beautiful pictures Kevin.

I believe i seen this bird on the north end of Manitowic Lake in Northern Ontario in Sept.2010. it scared me while i was fishing one day but the features of the bird where a bit different than the actual picture shown. the head and neck were a lot thicker than in the picture shown here. i hope to get a picture of this bird next year.
