Singapore: Kranji War Memorial

The Kranji War Memorial off Woodlands Road of Singapore actually consists of the State Cemetery, War Graves, Military Graves and the Memorial Wall. 4500 allied servicemen are buried in the War Graves and over 25000 names of allied servicemen who died in the South-East Asia theatre of WWII are commemorated on the walls of the great winged memorial. At the Western corner of the War Memorial are graves of commonwealth soldiers who died during the Confrontation and Malayan Communist Insurgency. Two early presidents of Singapore are buried in the State Cemetery at Northern end of the Memorial. The Memorial is immaculately maintained by the Commomwealth War Graves Commission. It is a fitting tribute for those who 'died for all free men' in the greatest conflict of modern history.

My Father, Thomas D. Leone, was an instructor Pilot at Darr Aerotech in Albany, Georgia in 1942 under the Arnold Scheme. He had a British cadet named Ken T. Orton Class 42K July 1942. He gave his address as: 22 St Stephens Garden, East Twickenham, Middlesex England on the back of a photo of himself. I understand Mr. Orton was assigned to a P-47 Squadron in Burma and was listed as KIA on 2/10/1944. His Sqdn was 146 Squadron. He is memorialized on Column 435 of the Singapore Memorial. I would love to get this photo to any surviving family if there are any. Can anyone help? My father passed away in 1968 in an air crash in Parkersburg, WV. I got some of his papers and found the photo. Tom Leone

Hello! I am trying to find out what has happened to my brother Michael Stork born on the 24/6/1961, he passed away on the 28/6/61, he was four days old. He was buried at the Ulu pandan cemetery in Singapore. My parents moved away to Malaysia not long after and were unaware that all souls were moved elsewhere. My dad was serving in the British army and my brother was born in the British hospital in Singapore. I have tried various sites etc but have not had much luck! My Uncle, Signalman Leonard Norman RIBBONS 2361578. H.Q. Malaya Command Sigs. Royal Corps of Signals died on 12th September 1944 (aged 26) when the Japanese ship Kachidoki Maru (transporting POWs from Singapore to Japan) was torpedoed by the USS Pampanito, the crew being unaware that POWs were aboard the unmarked ship. I believe that Leonard is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial, Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore, Column 45. Does anyone have a photo of column 45 or know where I could possibly obtain a photo of the commemoration, please?

I believe that my grand uncle David Henry Kleinman is burried at Kranji. How canI find out for sure? He died from his injuries he suffered in the bombing of the evacuation ship "SS Kuala" in 1942 at Dabo. He was a champion tennis player and Secretary of the Malayan Tennis Association. I will be in Singapore in August and it would be an honor to visit his gravesite.

Arthur Donald Scott is commemorated not in Kranji, but in New Zealand. His name is on Panel 12 of the New Zealand Naval Memorial, Devonport, Auckland. His date of death is given as 15th February 1942. A hpoto of the panel can be seen on the website of the New Zealand Navy Memorial.

Hi, I stumbled upon your page today, and wonder if you could help me. I am trying to find out what happened to my g.grandmother's brother, who fought in WW2 and disappeared. It had always haunted his family that no one knew what happened to him. Someone told me about the Singapore War Memorial and that someone had seen his name on there, but I can't seem to find a list of names or anything to check. He was Philip Crick, from the Kidderminster or Worcester Regiment - I think, and his date of birth was 1909, and we think he disappeared around 1943. I would be most grateful to know whether you have a record of this name within your collection, or any photos I could show her that could help us bring closure to his family, and finally lay him to rest. My dad and brother died when we lived in Singapore (Hawkins Road). He was in the Navy - HMS Terror P/J 968027. His name was Alfred Charles Barkley and he died on 24/10/64 and his and my brothers grave was relocated to Kranji. Hello there Christine, according to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, the name D.A. Pitchers (RAFVR) is listed on Column 424 of the Singapore Memorial at Kranji. This is a memorial for those whose remains were never found. For Susan, there is no record of Thomas Langstead, only a Ian Langstead (Royal Artillery), who is listed on Column 4 of the Singapore Memorial.

Hi, was wondering if anyone can help. When my dad was stationed in Singapore in the late 1960s, my mum had a stillbirth (my baby sister). It is likely that she was buried at Ulu Pandan approx 10/11 November 1969 - she is simply listed as Baby Cowan. From what I've gathered so far is that when Ulu Pandan was closed, the graves were relocated to Kranji Military Cemetery. Hi Readers Where can you search to find if a relative is commemorated/buried here at Kranji. My Uncle, Major Robert Genge of the Fijian Army was killed at Yong Peng in February 1955 and buried at Pasir Panjang, but I understand his remains were reburied at Kranji for some reason, I cannot find a reference to him on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site but that may be because it was not a World War that he was killed in which I think is all they administer. He was a lance corporal in the 1st Bn, Manchester regiment. Hi Vanessa, Would it be possible for you to locate my Uncle's grave please in Kranji War Cemetery. His name is John Joseph McNamara AIR 2/18th Bn. Australian Infantry. Died 27th January, 1942. There is a Reference of Sp.Mem. 5 E 2 . My Father (his brother is now 90 and would appreciate a photo of his brother's grave. Many thanks, this is much appreciated. Best wishes Robert McNamara.

My Grandfather is buried at the Kranji war cemetary and i would like to thank him and all the other brave men and women who are buried there for the sacrafice they made. My grandfathers name is Ronald Victor Winsbury. Love always Warren

Hello, my name is Erika Hall. I have a gentleman by the name of Bill Clayton who has requested me to find out if he is able to get any photo's or information on his brothers grave. His brother's name was James William Clayton, he was buried in Kranji War Memorial, Singapore at the age of 21. Date of death 8th Feb. 1942. Service Number VX63907. 2/10 Ordnance Workshop Company. My brother Ronald Arthur Bailey is buried in the cemetary. He was a private in the RASC and died in Changi Camp. He was 21 years old. I was a pilot with the R.A.F.

Hi Peter, my grandmother's brother, Stanley John Moore, is buried here. He was an Aircraftman 1st Class from the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. It is her 80th Birthday coming up and I have been trying to find a picture of Stanley's grave as a present. Do you have a picture or happen to know how I could obtain one? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thnak you
