COMMISSIONING of USS FORREST SHERMAN (DDG 98)

The US Navy commissioned the UNITED STATES SHIP FORREST SHERMAN (DDG 98) at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida on Saturday, January 28, 2006 at 11:00 AM. I attended the Commissioning with Mike Martino owner of Eco-Beach at Navarre Beach, Florida as his guest.

My son, USN, ret., are I were in the crowd because my father served on the earlier USS Forrest Sherman, and my brother and I are helping to get the older ship made into a museum to be berthed in Deleware (after a humongous fight with NAVSEA). We and a few of the earlier crews were in attendance (see coments above). (PS: you may remember me from a Master Naturalist class.)

I am a plankowner of Uss Forrest Sherman DD931 and attended both the christening and commissioning of DDG98. What an experience, will never forget. I presented a commissioning program booklet of DD931 to the Captain of the DDG98 and later received a very nice letter from him thanking me.God speed and fair winds....

Thanks for the pictures. My son just joined the ship as an new Ensign. He is very excited to be a part of the crew. The ship looks maginficent. My dad drove an LCVP in the Pacific in WW2 and I couldn't be more proud.

Beautiful PIctures - I worked on this ship and with the Pre-Commissioning Crew Members - before and after Katrina. She is a fabulous ship and it was such an honor for me to be a part of her construction and to be a part of the family aboard this ship. I attended the Commissioning ceremony - it was a bitter sweet for me to let her go - but I know she is out there to serve our country with Pride and Strength.

Frank, Thanks for noticing that in one of the descriptions above I misspelled the ship's name. The correct name is the USS Forrest Sherman and has two "r'" in Forrest. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Great pictures!! I was on the first USS Forrest Sherman DD-931. I was able to attend the christening of the USS Forrest Sherman DDG-98 along with about 150 crew members from different eras from the first Sherman. It was a very proud momemt to see the name of Forrest Sherman continue. I served on the USS Forrest Sheman DD-931 from 1969 to 1973. We have a foundation going to save DD-931. Again great pictures.

The pictures are great. My son in law is on this ship. My daughter and her daughter and son were present for this very historic occasion. I enjoyed the pictures because I was not able to attend myself. Thank you for showing the pictures at a site for those of us not able to attend,.
