27 After Hurricane Dennis (July 10, 2005)

On July 10, 2005 Hurricane Dennis hit Navarre Beach, Florida and my condo at The Belle Mer with the eye of the hurricane with 121 miles per hour winds. The photos posted on this site were taken by me the day afer Dennis hit and the days following this destruction.This is the second major hurricane to hit Navarre Beach in the last 10 months. Please book mark this site, because new photos will be added almost daily showing the reconstruction of Navarre Beach.

If you are interested in our environment, saving Wetlands and interested in property rights, my wife and I have a Story to Tell along with about 1,400 related photos showing our primary home and land on the Santa Rosa Sound in Navarre, FL being flooded everyday since August 2004 by Navarre Landing, a condo developer. actually jj... we were just there this weekend.... juana pagoda's is up and running again... it's right as you cross the bridge to the main beach.... just thought you might like to know.... the sailor's grille (also run by juana's>) is also up and running

Kenny - this is so very sad. We tried to go thru last year and they had the roads blocked. We loved Juana's and now I cannot find it in the restaurant listing so I guess they did not rebuild. I saw Barracuda's sign but no restaurant either. I could not find the Holiday Inn in any listings. That is such a beautiful place. I am deeply touched.

We have always come to Navarre and stayed at Sugar Beach. Last year we even planned on coming even though front units were gone and stay in side units until Dennis struck. That doesn't look to be so feasible this year so we are looking to possibly rent either the Luna Sea 1 and 2 (7691 Gulf Blvd.) or the Sandbar and Sandpiper for this upcoming July. From the ERA website it looks like they are taking reservations, but wondered if you had any idea how they seem to have weathered? Looks like ipc 050724-1_0122.jpg is the front side of the Luna Sea but not absolutely positive. Any chance you might have ocean side pics of these also? Any news, pics or thoughts you have would be truly appreciated! Love all of the pics you've provided through the years - keep up the great work!

Dear Kenny, Thank you for posting these pictures for all of us to see. My husband and I were married in Navarre Beach State Park on September 2, 2004, approximately 1 week before Ivan hit. (We've been told it was one of the last.) We stayed at The Pearl with our families in tow and had an absolutely wonderful time. It is truely devestating to see mother natures fury destroying such a beautiful piece of our world. It is very difficult for us to see the destruction considering our ties to the beach. I can only imagine how you and your wife are feeling through all the devastation. I am so sorry for your loss. My only regret is that our wedding pictures (although gorgeous) had more emphasis on the nature surrounding us as well. Sincerely, Sommer Smith

Kenny , I have been over on Navarre Beach 3 or 4 times since Dennis blasted in. The barrier island is wiped out. I use to fish off the pier all the time now it's cut in half. I live over on East Bay and took two hits from Ivan and Dennis. Ivan was the worst. We're still in the recovery mode over here. Great pics. Thanks a lot.

To the Guest that inquired about Holley by the Sea and the adjoining Hidden Creek Golf Club and homes, I did not make any photos of this area. Neither did I take many photos of the Navarre mainland. Most of my photos focused on the Navarre Beach area. I think it is o.k. to come down to the mainland area of Navarre, but Navarre Beach only has complete water, sewer, power and phone services from Cocodrie’s to Arkansas Street, which is only about one mile from the causeway. Reconstruction on Navarre Beach seems to be taking place at a rapid pace. Yesterday I created a photo gallery for Before Hurricane Dennis. These photos were taken about 48 hours before Dennis hit Navarre Beach. The photos were taken during a walk along the beach that started at the Belle Mer where some of the owners were “boarding up”, and then where my walk continued along the beach to the Fishing Pier and the Navarre Beach State Park. I moved out of the gulf coast region in 1993 and at the time had hoped a hurricane would come through to bring down some of the commercial tall buildings that seemed to take up so much of the public beach. I spent many a day enjoying the coast between Pensacola Beach and Navarre, however, I have learned to watch what you wish for as it appears that not only ARE some of the buildings gone, but so is the beautiful beach that I loved so much. Good luck in restoring this beautiful area for more to enjoy.

I made more photos yesterday of Juana’s and Sailor’s Grill. It looks to me that Sailor’s Grill is in pretty good shape. Juana’s will have to be reconstructed. The photos can viewed on Pages 17 and Pages 18 of my Dennis Gallery. You can view all of my photos in sizes small, medium, large and original. The “original” size will show more detail since it is about 1000 Kbps. I’ll be photographing more photos today of Navarre Beach showing properties west of the Belle Mer.

Some of you wondered why I left out photo(s) of Juana’s as you enter Navarre Beach. When I arrived at Navarre Beach the morning after Hurricane Dennis hit there were about a dozen large TV trucks and other news media vehicles that blocked my view of Juana’s. I’m sorry I missed taking a photo of this important icon of Navarre Beach. However, I did take several photos of Juana’s two days after Dennis hit. They are now posted on page 1 and page 17 of my Dennis Photo Gallery. It looks like Juana’s will have to be demolished and rebuilt again to its former glory.

Ken and Dale, you two are some of our favorite customers at Waffle House. We brighten up every time when we see you walk through the door. I hope you get everything straightened out with both homes. We really don't wanna lose you two. I believe everyone has a fairy godmother sort of person and I think that you both were mine while I was pregnant. I would not have had very much for Aydan if not for you. I love you guys and hope that you can at least stay for a little while longer. I am very sorry about the damage to both homes and if there is anything I can do for you, please let me know. Even it has to do with cleanup. I am very glad that you guys came into my life. Hello, just found your pictures.. I believe I talked with you a bit and remember seeing you taking pics before the Hurricane.. we were on the 10th floor July 4th week . Your wife gave us helpful info and we did leave early to come home which helped alot. My family visits Navarre very year & this was our first at Belle Mer.. It was beautiful. Kenny-- A picture is truly worth 1000 words. Your 100-plus thousand word description is vivid-- great photo work. We have a lot of re-repairs to do. Though we know just how the Malones and Tim feel (we were exactly there last fall), we take some small solace that the EFIS missing all seems to be the original and not the new. Belle Mer's greatest worry seems not to be the specific damage but having zero beach. We feel so badly for all those up and down the beach who are hit so much harder than we-- and especially for YOU who have no place to live. God Bless

My father in law Dr. Boyd Helm (1301) does not have many sources of info regarding the condo, and I'm sure your pictures have given him and my mother in law some comfort. They feared that Belle Mer would be completely gone from the news reports It's good to know that we have neighbors like you in the building..

Hard to believe anyone could ask if things are ready to be rented in 2 weeks. I hear that Navarre BEACH will be shut down for months because of the broken sewage. This was reported on local news. This was devastation people! People who LIVE there can't go back to live right now. THINK....

Kenny: Great job...it actually was comforting to see your pixs. I believe the Belle Mer will rise again and we will be probably, sole owners of the beach....we will have our privacy and the infrastructure will follow in time. Is there anything that can be done to help politic, concerning rebuilding the beach and sandbars. Last I heard was the county would start the project in November, We really need it and have pretty good proof....I bet Holiday Inn was a sight. Keep the pictures coming. We were coming down this week, our 2nd trip since Ivan but will pass and hope AC is restored for mildew relief. That one vist we encountered Arlene so I hope we can change up Hurricane Hwy! I am also hopeful that the ownership can finally get some help from our insurers as well. The double assessments were supportive and proactive by the ownership for Ivan but we need insurance support this time. Thanks again and good luck all-Buz and Cherri-#603.

Thanks for the pictures. It is comforting to see for yourself. As far as I can tell it looks like the underneath, the pool decking, and the top 3 floors sustained damage, but the rest is just clean up. Is that about right? Missie Haislip Unit 403
