Despite the calm appearance of this scene, a bitterly cold December day with a good stiff wind blowing off the harbour made this one of the most challenging photographs I've taken.
In the time it took to set up my camera and lens on the tripod, my face was already stinging and my gloved fingers were going numb — and I had yet to determine my composition, let alone apply the necessary camera adjustments. Another concern was whether the wind would cause camera movement during the relatively long exposure required (1/2 second).
Trying to ignore the now painful discomfort and the thought of contracting a real case of frostbite, I knew I had a very good picture and stuck with it, making two exposures. The heavy tripod, a (pre-carbon fibre) Gitzo 410, held the camera steady and my perseverance (stubborness?) paid off in a very sharp and very satisfying image.
