Kodiak is an island approx 250 air miles Southwest of Anchorage.It is 3465 square miles in area.
It is mountianous and heavily forested in the north and east and almost treeless in the south.
With a comparatively mild climate for Alaska due to the action of the Japanese Current.
It has an annaul rainfall of 60+ inches which provides an abundance of vegetation that
literally covers the island in the summer with a brilliant green.
The largest city on the island is Kodiak with a population of 12,000. The only other populated areas
on the island are six small fishing villages with populations ranging from approx 25 to 220 people.
The fishing industry fuels the economy and Kodiak is ranked among the top three ports in the U.S.
Kodiak City is home to more than 650 comerrical fishing vessels with another 125 are ported in the villages.
The island teems with wildlife including many species of Land and Marine Mammals, and over 30 species of birds including Land, Sea and Insohre.
The two most popular of the wildlife are the Bald Eagles and the Kodiak Bears. In fact there are so many eagles
that congregate around the fishing cannerys in the winter months, the "locals" refer to them as Kodiak's piegons.
