Today we rode to board a ferry across Lake Balaton to the scenic Tihany Peninsula that extends far into the lake from the northern shore. The center of the district is the Benedictine Abbey, which was founded in 1055 by András (Andrew) I, who is buried in the crypt. (The founding charter of this abbey is the first extant record of Hungarian language.) The church itself was rebuilt in baroque style in 1754. The still functioning abbey is a popular tourist attraction due to the historical and artistic significance. It also has a wonderful, elevated view of Lake Balaton.
After lunch at Tihany, we traveled by bus to the Orchidea Hotel, situated near Tengelic in a protected natural environment. This territory is famous for its bird colonies (e.g. grey herons and black woodpeckers) and its precious and rare wild flowers such as the sand iris and different kinds of orchids.
