Syracuse was the second city of the Greek empire in the 3rd & 4th centuries B.C. It was the home of Archimedes and temporarily of Aeschylus and Plato. During the Peloponnesian wars, a major Athenian expeditionary force was disastrously defeated at the gates of Syracuse.
