Biking on St. George Island, Florida and to Apalachicola, Florida in March, 2010.
St. George Island arcs for 25 miles across the outlet of the Apalachicola River in the Florida Panhandle, forming the outer barrier of Apalachicola Bay. The eastern 10 miles of the island forms the St. George Island State Park, a lonely stretch of gorgeous beaches and windswept, hurricane-formed dunes. Apalachicola is a major fishing and shipping port and is famous for its oysters. Before the Civil War, Apalachicola was a major Gulf port and the town still displays a number of impressive antebellum mansions.
Most of our bike ride from St. George Island to Apalachicola, 12 miles in each direction, was on two 5-mile causeways. The first connects the island to the mainland and the second spans the mouth of the Apalachicola River to reach the west bank town of Apalachicola.
