Kingston and the Thousand Islands

Kingston was once the capital of Canada. It still retains the elegance of an important city and is nicknamed the Limestone City because of the abundance of stately limestone buildings. It is at the confluence of Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence river and the Rideau Canal, which was built by Canada during tense times with the U.S. in the mid-19th century to provide a secure water route between the Great Lakes and the Ottawa River.

Ft. Henry, on a point across from the city, overlooks Kingston and was built to guard both the St. Lawrence river and the Rideau Canal.

Immediately to the east of Kingston is the Thousand Islands of the St. Lawrence. Immediately to the west is Prince Edward county, a serene rural setting of orchards and vineyards.
