Gatun Dam is the dam holding back the Chagres River to create Gatun Lake. This lake supplies all of the water needed to service both the Gatun Locks and the Pedro Miguel and Miraflores Locks at the south end of the canal. The flood-prone Chagres River was one of the most significant challenges facing the origianl canal designers.
