Banded Stilt breeding event at Lake Torrens, South Australia

The Banded Stilt is an enigmatic wader species that is a resident wader in Australia. It only breeds when the ephemeral lakes of inland Australia fill with water which is, on average, every 8-10 years. This year many inland lakes and wetlands have water and have come to life. The Banded Stilt flew 1000kms from the Coorong in South Australia to Lake Torrens where some 140,000 of them have bred from April through June 2010 - their first major breeding since 2000. To witness the second clutch of eggs and resultant chicks was very exciting and awe inspiring. Enjoy some of the images.
