The thermal areas in Yellowstone National Park spew steam, blast superheated water into the air, brew cauldrons of hot water and mud. The patterns that are created in each thermal setting is different from other because of the water temperature, minerals in the water, sediment in the water and other variables.
One of the curiosities is presented by algae. Different algae have different tolerances for temperature. Because of that genetic characteristic, the color of the algae in the water can tell visitors the temperature of the water. As the temperature changes further away from the vent, the color of the algae changes. Nature's thermostat.
Here are some of the patterns that caught my eye during our recent visit.
