Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located on the shore of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It includes 42 miles of shoreline and offers dramatic scenery. Pictured Rocks derives its name from its colorful sandstone cliffs. The cliffs, up to 200 feet tall, have naturally sculptured caves, arches, and many fascinating formations.
Colorful designs and patterns, created by mineral stains, appear on the rock surface of the cliffs. The stains are caused by water running down the cliffs carrying oxides of copper, manganese, iron, and organic minerals. Red and orange are created by copper, green and blue by iron, black is manganese, and white is lime. The interplay of color is a marvelous sight.
The detail of the stained colors is best seen in enlarged views of the photos.
