There is a long history of Native Americans in the Southwest. Their art, culture and housing are recognizable around the world.
Native Americans in New Mexico have long been referred to as Pueblo Indians (from the Spanish word meaning “village.”) Early Pueblo Indians lived in compact, apartment like villages of stone or adobe. The Taos and Acoma Pueblos are favorites to visit because they are traditional in their architecture and still used by families for ceremonies.
There is a Pueblo Indian Cultural Center in Albuquerque that serves as a museum and Native American center. It also has an outstanding restaurant. As part of the many activities offered, each Saturday morning, representatives from one of the 13 New Mexican Pueblos come to the center to present traditional demonstrations of music, dance, food and crafts. That's a very special treat.
