U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt visited the Grand Canyon in 1903. Being an avid outdoorsman and conservationist, he established the Grand Canyon Game Preserve in 1906. Opponents - land and mining claim holders - blocked efforts to classify it as a U.S. National Park. The Grand Canyon National Park was finally established as the 17th U.S. National Park by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919.
