Fungi are everywhere. They are the primary decomposers of organic matter in most if not all terrestrial ecosystems. The fungal kingdom has been estimated to contain about 1.5 million species. Yeasts, molds, and mushrooms are included in the fungi family.

Human use of fungi for food preparation or preservation and other purposes is extensive and has a long history: yeasts are required for fermentation of beer, wine and bread. Mushroom farming and mushroom gathering are large industries in many countries. Many fungi produce antibiotics, including penicillin.

From the Mushroom Sage… There are old mushroom collectors and there are bold mushroom collectors, but there are no old, bold mushroom collectors.

Fungi come in many shapes, sizes and colors. Many are fanciful and have been given descriptive names like Red Coral, Rock Licorice, Black Earth Tongue, Golden Fairy Club, Devil’s Fingers, Witches’ Butter, Gray Oyster, Turkey Tail, Poison Pie, Staghorn Fungus, Dead Man’s Foot, and Corn Silk. There are many, many more.

Here are a few photos of fungi encountered on the trail during the past year or two.
