Like everyone else at Higgins, we eagerly looked forward to a few of those classic summer days of sunshine, light breezes and lazy days on the beach. There were few of those days - until September. Despite the calendar saying that is was after Labor Day, when everyone starts getting out their ice fishing equipment, the weather was spectacular. There were consecutive days of sunshine. In fact, we had nearly three weeks of really good weather. It was cool, but the sun was out, the clouds were great for photography and the breezes were fair.
The cool weather promoted a few more fires in the fireplace to keep the chill out of the cottage and an early show of fall colors. The geese and loons were moving and there was a smell of fall on the air.
We packed the month as full as we could with things that we wanted to do before we closed the cottage. It was also during this month that we learned that our dear friend and loyal companion, Baxter, has developed a stomach tumor. We focused on spending time with him and doing things that we knew we all enjoyed. We miss him more than words can explain and are grateful for all of the wonderful times we had, the best of which were at Higgins Lake.
