Huaca Pucllana Thu 12

Huaca Pucllana is an
adobe (mud brick) “pyramid” in the Miraflores district
of Lima, Peru. It was a ceremonial and administrative
centre for the “Lima Culture” between 200 and 700AD.

The mud bricks were handmade and, when dry, they were
“stacked” on edge, with a gap between them (this helped
them absorb the movement caused by many earthquakes
over hundreds of years). A layer of mud placed on top of
each “course” served as the base for the next course.
The resulting pattern (bond) resembles books sitting on
shelves, and is therefore referred to as “bookshelf style”.
