the “khlongs” or canals of
Bangkok prompted western traders, in the early 1800s,
to refer to Bangkok as the “Venice of the East”. Many
of the khlongs, which once crisscrossed the central
plains of Thailand, have been filled in and replaced by
roads, but some remain. They are popular with tourists.
