Shophouses are “terraced
buildings” which stand side by side, and have an arcade or
covered walkway which runs along the front of the shops and
provides pedestrians shade from the sun and rain. The facades,
of these shops in Purvis Street, Singapore, reflect the Chinese
influences exerted by Hiananese merchants in the early 1900s.
