John Cadbury was born (12 Aug. 1802),
into a wealthy, Quaker family, in Birmingham, England where he
started a small business selling tea, coffee and drinking chocolate
in 1824. When he retired in 1861 his son’s John and Richard took
over the running of the business and moved the chocolate factory
from Bridge Street in central Birmingham to a site at Bournbrook
Hall about 4 miles south. The Cadburys were very interested in the
fitness of their employees and encouraged their participation in all
forms of outdoor sports and constructed facilities such as swimming
pools and grassed pitches used for hockey, football, cricket and a
running track. The “Men’s Recreation Grounds” were built in 1896.
