La Madelaine (see yesterday’s
almost daily email) is at one end of rue Royale and place de
la Concorde is at the other end. This photo was taken looking
south-west from rue Royale. The “Fountain of River Commerce
and Navigation” is in the centre of this photo with the Egyptian
obelisk, which once marked the entrance to the Luxor Temple,
behind it. To the left of the obelisk (and behind it) is the façade
of the Palais Bourbon (very similar to La Madeleine). Behind this
on the horizon is the gilt dome of L’Hôtel national des Invalides.
To the right of the fountain and obelisk you can see a temporary
grandstand, erected specially for the finish of the Tour de France
which finished (on the Champs-Élysées) in front of it last Sunday.
