the Tasman Bridge, which crosses
the Derwent River north of Hobart, is 1,395 metres (4,576 ft.) long (including approaches) and
connects the CBD, on the western shore, with the airport and residential areas on the eastern
shore. It was severely damaged, on Sunday, 5 January, 1975 (less than 10 years after it was
completed), when the bulk ore carrier Lake Illawarra collided with it causing two pylons and 3
sections to collapse onto the ship which sank and remains on the bottom of the river to this day.
Rainfall in Brisbane during the last 24 hours was 1•5 mm.
