Horse shoe crab - Bang Saray Beach, Thailand

Dorothy and I went for a walk along the beach this morning. Because it is NY's eve, there were lots of food stalls setting up on a stretch of beach that has palm trees and shade, a favourite Bang Saray picnic spot for Thai visitors and locals. There I came upon a stack of 'fish', which I have never seen before. What is it? how does it taste. It looks like a fierce opponent if I'd encounter it underwater, a bit like a military piece of weaponry, or a creature from a SciFi or horror movie. Excuse the blurryness, taken with phone.

A friend from Singapore just gave me some more info. It is called a Horseshoe crab, and isn't actually a crab at all.

I had a chat today with my massage therapist, very well educated and wise woman. She said the Thai name is Maengda Talay, which translates as "Giant Waterbeetle of the sea".

She said the animal is used for a YAM, a sour and spicy salad, only later I found out only the eggs are used. Apparently, some of them or some parts of them can contain toxins dangerous to humans, so I think I may avoid eating them.

This animal is more closely related to spiders than to crabs. But, having seen them before and having had them in hand, there is essentially nothing to eat there. They are hollow underneath. So, what do they do with them in terms of food?!
