to Celebrate the Caka New Year, the Hindu people in Bali are gathering at their kampong doing Melasti, washing of the temple implements before the new year, Nyepi.
The Balinese go to the beach to wash their temple equipment in the sea as part of a ritual cleansing. This ritual also is the symbol to to clean the sin that we did and praying for the balance of our world (Buana Agung) and people (Buana Alit).
This ritual usually takes place 4-2 days before Nyepi. So, we can see this ritual as the starting of Nyepi. 1 day before Nyepi, Balinese people will be gathering around their public place or pura ot pray together at Tawur Kesanga Ritual. The purpose of this ritual is to pray for the lowest creature (Butha Kala) and honoring them to get into a higher place to balance our world. The end part of this ritual is, Ngrupuk, which is the ritual the get rid of the Butha Kala from their village to get the holiness of Nyepi for tomorrow.
Celebrating Ngrupuk, balinese people waling around their village especially to every crossroad and junction they have, to carry their big toy as the simbolization of Bhuta Kala. They walk aroud to get rid of Butha Kala from every inch of their village.
While at Nyepi, most of the balinese have to stay at their home with out light, are prohibited to do their regular activity, are prohibited to do anything for their leisure and stay quietly at their home.
After Nyepi, all Balinese people will celebrate their new year by going to other's house in order to celebrate Ngembak Geni and burn the Big Toy, whic are used in Ngrupuk Festival.
There are also unique ritual at Banjar Kaja, Sesetan, Denpasar. They ussualy celebrate the new year by gathering their single young people, women/girl and men/boy, and pair them in a couple then each couple should be kissing one by one. If there is any couple getting hot while kissing, the others will splash them with buckets of water.
