Our first day in Italy! After checking in, we wander around Venice. Looking down the Grand Canal from the Rialto bridge. |
Thursday, we start with the Correr museum, across from the basilica. Notice the flooding in Piazza San Marco. |
In the afternoon, we take a tour of the clock tower, recently opened to the public. |
Here's the clock keeper's front door. He and his family lived in the tiny rooms above, next to the clock works. |
The clock works took up most of the living space. |
Looking out one of the port hole windows at the basilica and the Grand Canal beyond. |
One floor up from the main clock works, the two cylinders that form the "digital" part of the clock face. |
A couple times a year, the cylinders are connected to these brackets and pulled inside, so that 4 figures . . . |
can travel out and back in the openings via this cogged track. |
The 3 Magi honor the statue of the Madonna and child on the outside by tipping their crowns as they go by. |
A view out the rear of the clock tower building. Notice the porters, below, hauling goods to non-canal addresses. |
The ancient building is braced for support. |
The claustrophobic climb to the roof. |
The view across the rooftops of Venice. Notice all the roof terraces. |
We have our photo taken with the Moors, just before it's time for them to strike the hour. |
The tide has turned and Piazza San Marco is beginning to dry up. |
Friday, we get up early to see what Venice is like before the tour groups arrive. |
We explore the side canals. It's very quiet. |
Many of the chimneys in Venice are topped by funnels that kill any embers before they endanger the surrounding neighborhood. |
Some of the canals are very narrow. |
 |
We had the place almost to ourselves. |
 |
 A barge making deliveries. |
To negotiate the corner, the pilot had to execute a Y turn. |
The San Zaccharia church, across the piazza from our hotel. |
 |
Later that morning, we toured St. Mark's basilica. The inside is almost entirely covered with beautiful mosaics like this one. |
Inside the courtyard of the Doge's palace, next to St. Mark's. |
Venetians used to post complaints through these letter slots. |
The Doge's palace is ornately decorated. |
The prison (connected to the palace by the bridge of sighs) is not as fancy. |
The standard for comfort in Italian beds was likely set here. |
When prisoners were locked in, they were REALLY locked in. |
A view from inside the bridge of sighs, looking at all the tourists taking photos of the bridge of sighs. |
Pierre emerges from our hotel, after our afternoon break. |
Our hotel suite's sitting room. |
 Our bedroom. |
Our bathroom. Took us a while to figure out the shower's electronic controls. |
Here we are on vaporetto #1, heading for a ride down the Grand Canal. |
 |
Modern Venetian transportation meets the more traditional method. |
Passing under the Rialto bridge. |
A rare example of a palazzo with grand facades on two sides. |
One of the Grand Canal's large, sweeping curves. |
 Canine hood ornament |
 |
 A rare Venetian garden/park |
Gondolas lined up outside the Gritti Palace Hotel. |
Venice was a major gateway to the East, so there are lots of byzantine touches in the architecture. |
Passing by Piazza San Marco at the bottom of the Grand Canal. |
Back home in Piazza San Zaccharia |
After dinner, Kathleen tried on a carnevale mask and cape. |
Saturday, we took the boat to Murano, then walked to the glass museum. |
Murano has a country village feel, after seeing the grandeur of Venice's big island. |
Few Murano buildings are taller than three stories. |
A large glass sculpture in front of a Murano bell tower. |
Murano has lots of pretty flower boxes. |
The canals are lined with glass factories, galleries, and shops. |
 Glass flowers |
One last shot, before we get on the boat/bus back to the big island. |
In the afternoon, we went looking for La Fenice opera house, the subject of two books that Kathleen had been reading. |
We also found this passageway. Notice the water encroaching on the left. |
Many homeowners in Venice have had to abandon their "ground" floors to the rising water levels in the city. |
Behind the opera house, Pierre found a photogenic lizard. |
 The lizard photographer |
 A passing gondolier |
Traghetti are gondolas that cross the narrower sections of the Grand Canal. Locals stand while crossing. |
Dinner along a side canal for our last night in Venice. |
A crescent moon over San Giorgio Maggiore |
Sunday, our final morning, we catch the view from the top of San Giorgio Maggiore's bell tower. |
 panoramic views |
 A police patrol boat |
Back on the big island, we take one last stroll through the back streets. |
A bridge leading to a private residence. |
A fork in the canal |
 |
We saw lots of unleashed Venetian dogs trotting obediently after their owners. |
On the vaporetto heading for the train station, we passed a bride and groom. |
 Arrivederci Venice! |
