Venice
Our first day in Italy! After checking in, we wander around Venice. Looking down the Grand Canal from the Rialto bridge. |
Thursday, we start with the Correr museum, across from the basilica. Notice the flooding in Piazza San Marco. |
In the afternoon, we take a tour of the clock tower, recently opened to the public. |
Here's the clock keeper's front door. He and his family lived in the tiny rooms above, next to the clock works. |
The clock works took up most of the living space. |
Looking out one of the port hole windows at the basilica and the Grand Canal beyond. |
One floor up from the main clock works, the two cylinders that form the "digital" part of the clock face. |
A couple times a year, the cylinders are connected to these brackets and pulled inside, so that 4 figures . . . |
can travel out and back in the openings via this cogged track. |
The 3 Magi honor the statue of the Madonna and child on the outside by tipping their crowns as they go by. |
A view out the rear of the clock tower building. Notice the porters, below, hauling goods to non-canal addresses. |
The ancient building is braced for support. |
