Tuesday, Sept. 14, we arrive in Florence. Looking for lunch, we find the Duomo. |
Inside, looking up at Brunelleschi's dome. |
Kathleen lies on her back to get a better shot. Why are people staring? |
Outside, facing the church, copies of Ghiberti's doors on the baptistery. |
Ghiberti used mathematics to create the illusion of receding distance on a flat surface. |
A carriage driver and his horse take a mid-day siesta. |
Our hotel is on the Arno, just a few buildings down from the Ponte Vecchio. |
 The Hotel Berchielli |
The tiny campo outside Hotel Berchielli. |
We did have a room with a view, but not a view of the Arno. |
 Our spacious room |
 |
The garish, but spotless bathroom. |
Wednesday, we got up early to see the city wake up. |
Hundreds of padlocks, attached to chains that line the Arno walkways, because of a popular romantic story. |
 |
Silver and Gold shops on the Ponte Vecchio |
The Palazzo Vecchio -- Notice the copy of David at lower right. That's where the original used to stand. |
The morning sun hitting the bell tower of Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo) church. |
The street behind the Duomo |
 Pierre has a pre-breakfast espresso. |
After breakfast, we explore the other side of the river (the Oltrarno.) |
Up this steep, narrow road, we find a door to the Casa Bardini. |
The Casa Bardini has a beautiful, peaceful garden, |
 with interesting, modern statues |
and spectacular views of Florence! |
 |
 |
Pierre wears the Duomo as a hat. |
At the back of the garden, a section of the ancient city wall. |
 |
Back out on the streets, we pass this house. |
Looks like a cat lover lives here. |
The back entrance to the Boboli Gardens, the grounds of the Pitti Palace. |
These gardens are much more formal and include a roman-style amphitheater. |
The back of the Pitti Palace. |
From the highest parts of the Boboli Gardens, there are beautiful views across the Tuscan hills. |
 An interesting drinking fountain. |
 |
A "grotto" to one side of the Pitti Palace. |
Michelangelo's prisoner sculptures were originally supposed to be placed here. |
Frescoes on the domed ceiling. |
A fountain outside the grotto. |
Thursday, a visit to Piazza Santa Croce and |
Santa Croce church. Many famous Italians are entombed in here. |
 Galileo |
 Michelangelo |
 Dante |
 Machiavelli |
 and Botticelli |
The stained glass is beautiful. |
And so are the frescoes by Giotto. |
In the afternoon, a visit to the Uffizi. Beautiful Botticelli paintings and this view from a second floor window. |
Our last full day in Florence, we pass this photo of the 1966 floods. |
No flooding today, just a gorgeous sky! |
