Over a century ago, all you would have seen here were a grassy mound and single ruin. Then, in the 1890s, fierce storms exposed a cluster of early structures and this turned out to be one of Europe's most important archaeological sites. For 4,000 years people lived, worked and built at Jarlshof. What is here today is the result of construction and abandonment of many settlements from different time periods, one on top of another.
