The Royal Mile starts at the entrance of Edinburgh Castle and runs down the east shoulder of a once active volcano, from Edinburgh Castle at the top of the Castle rock down to Holyrood Abbey, a ruined abbey on the grounds of Holyrood Palace. Holyrood Palace is Queen Elizabeth's official residence in Scotland.
