The Trebuchet

view map

The big machine in the foreground is a trebuchet, a type of "medieval siege engine." It is a giant catapult used for hurling stone balls at the walls and ramparts of castles, weakening their defenses and preparing the way for foot soldiers. Edward I brought siege engines to Scotland and even had them made there. Urquhart Castle itself suffered a siege in September 1303 when it fell into the hands of Edward I's army.
