Located at the southern tip of Mainland, these Stone Age ruins were uncovered during a violent storm in 1905. Archaeologists have since found artifacts dating from the Bronze and Iron Ages. The name Jarlshof, meaning "Earl's Mansion," was coined by Walter Scott, who visited the site in 1814. Although the name is based on the Scottish period name of "the laird's house," it was more than a century later before excavations proved that there had actually been Viking Age settlement on the site. There is no evidence that a Norse jarl ever lived there. In the background of this photo is a visitor's center.
