view map

In 1935, nearly 14 miles above the Earth's surface, U.S. Army Air Corps Captain Albert Stevens, aboard the National Geographic Explorer II, snapped the first color photograph taken from the stratosphere and the first photograph showing the curve of Earth's surface. The gondola of the Explorer II is on display in the Smithsonian Institute's National Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
