Firsts of Flight

view map

Left to right: Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis in which he made the first solo flight across the Atlantic; the first privately developed, piloted vehicle to reach space, SpaceShipOne; and the Bell X-1 in which "Chuck" Yeager first broke the mythical "sound barrier." At the bottom of the photo is the red Breitling Orbiter 3 Gondola in which, on March 21,1999, Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones completed the first nonstop flight around the world in a balloon, taking "only" 19 days, 21 hours and 55 minutes. -- on display in the Smithsonian's National Air & Space Museum.
