Joe Louis and Lee Marvin

view map

At left is the tomb of heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis. The small, nondescript tombstone at right, marks the grave of actor Lee Marvin. Louis served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. Marvin was a Private First Class in the Marines in World War II. In the battle of Saipan in 1944, Marvin was one of only nine survivors of his unit. He was seriously wounded during the battle and was awarded the Purple Heart. The graves of Joe Louis and Lee Marvin are located near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.
