This collection of cedar baskets and woven items was donated by Vi Hilbert, an Upper Skagit elder and teacher of the Lushootseed language. Vi has been instrumental in sharing and preserving First Peoples culture and heritage. The stories behind the meaning of the designs in these baskets are amazing. Each basket/item had a specific purpose (i.e. berry basket, clam basket, ceremonial hat). It is Vi's wish that this collection be honored and shared at IslandWood.
This collection is primarily made of cedar bark with some incorporation of bear grass and equisetum (Horsetails).
It was an honor to photograph these beautiful woven artifacts with such rich histories.
