Silver eggs

view map

This is the famous "Boneyard" in Tucson, Arizona. Thanks to its dry air
and hard ground that does not require paving, the site is currently home
to over 4,000 military aircraft retired from service with the US military.

They keep'em planes protected from the elements in five levels of conservation,
ranging from the "ready to fly" (after removing the protective film and covers, and
putting the engines back in) to those just about to be dismantled for scrap.

A sight to behold, it can only be visited as a guided tour organized by
the PIMA air museum (it's an active US Air Force facility). Well worth it for any
plane aficionado, even if they won't allow your to step off the bus.

I love this shot! I need to get back there - I still haven't been on the bus ride yet. ~BV~

Fantastic juxtaposition of elements. Works great as a panorama.
