A quick overview of my route. The drive, 2100 km in all, takes in many great sights.

A lot of people do just that - rent a car at the Keflavik Airport and then drive the Route 1
around the island. Doing it in ten days as I did is a bit rushed, but doable -
as long as you accept that being on the move is a big part of your being there.

It can perfectly well be done in a regular car (no need for a 4x4 for route #1), but
do not take 'shortcuts' just because you see a side F road drawn on the map. :)
