Stockton beach stretches from the town of Stockton, at the North head of Newcastle Harbour, 32km North to Anna Bay. During the Great Depression in the 1930's, squatters built a series of tin shacks approximately halfway along the beach. Today just eleven shacks remain and are known as 'Tin City'. No new shacks can be built, the shacks cannot be sold, and they cannot be rebuilt if they are damaged by the elements. The area was used for filming of the 1979 movie Mad Max.
