There's a beach just north of San Simeon that was taken over by elephant seals several years ago. By March all the pups have been born and the mothers have fattened them up. Then the mothers go out to sea to feed and the pups remain on the beach living off their blubber. Eventually they will get hungry, learn how to swim and leave. This one was either yawning or posturing, but mostly, they just lie there.
