Fun with Rain-X

This is my first attempt at the Rain-X technique I've seen several times (Ed Knepley and others). It was harder than I thought--I couldn't get the camera to focus on the drops rather than the plate underneath. I had to handhold the camera because my tripod won't hold it facing straight down, so it isn't as sharp as it could be. I'll try again with a less fussy subject.

Canon PowerShot Pro 1
1/50s f/3.2 at 20.0mm full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

Nicely done for an 'amateur'!

For a first attempt, I think this is excellent. It's a technique I'd like to try some time.

I thought you'd dreamed this composition up until I read your explanation that some other folks were doing it also. I'd never seen a shot like this before and I like it. I'm not familiar with the camera you were using so when you said you were having trouble getting it to lock focus on the drops instead of the plate I assume this particular camera lacks manual focus. All in all, it's an interesting shot that I might want to attempt myself sometime. I'll look forward to seeing your future efforts in this vein. Thanks for posting it.

Oh wow! I thought it was a paintshop effect before I read the explanation - very clever!

Very cool effect. I doubt I could get my camera to lock focus on this one either.

i think it's nice...you got the focus right. i do think it's a bit too "geometric" to really look like rain.

I think it's great! You must have a steady hand if you din't use your tripond.

Kewl!! the possibilities..... larger drops, especially if they were oddly shaped....

Rain-X is stuff you buy at an automotive store for car windshields. On glass it makes water bead up uniformly. I applied the drops of water with a soda straw, one at a time. Very tedious!

This is great! I'd love an explanation of Rain-X too.
