Unguarded moment

She left the streets, the punters, the danger. Took refuge in one of the few places she'd be unmolested for a while. In that moment of solitude as she thought about the hell she lived in, she thought vaguely of letting herself drop into the dark flowing water, of letting herself go forever.

I'd had an encounter with Evie. Something that made her feel real and vivid to me. She had been seeming a very difficult personality, someone feisty, violent, unreachably hating, sabotaging much of my attempt at intimacy, capable of being very manipulative, hostile.

I set out to make this picture with her as a young streetgirl, mid teens, runaway and turning tricks to survive. I felt it would portray the sense of her I had. So it was an absolute surprise how the picture ended up, as all my inner images tend to be when they start to communicate something beyond my ego. When the image completed I saw the profound vulnerability and grief in her eyes in this 'Unguarded moment' and I fell in love with her. It was a turning point, the first time I saw her as anything other than a saboteur and enemy inside me.
