High on a hill overlooking the long-declining city of Waterbury, CT, sit the remains of Holy Land USA, a biblical theme park constructed in the 1950s at the initiative of John Baptist Greco. During its peak in the 1960s and 1970s, it attracted upwards of 40,000 visitors per year, according to Wikipedia. Closed since 1984, it has been left to decay, except for the replacement of its original, illuminated cross with a floodlit, fifty-foot, stainless steel cross, which dominates the Waterbury skyline and can be viewed from I-84.
