Damage to the outside of Fort Pulaski. The battle fought here was the first major combat deployment of a rifled cannon, and unfortunately for the Condederate soldiers of Fort Pulaski, they were on the loosing side of the gun. The far corner in this image was breached, as was the magazine on the other side of the fort, which was the final loss causing the Confederate surrender. Some of the shells are still embedded in the masonry.
