Only the few biggest ones are permanently inhabbited, making the rest an ideal place for exploration and eremitic way of life. Getting to the ones in archipelagos is easy - just turn up or remove your trousers and walk to one. The sea goes deep very slowly. Althou it looks scary, there are no dangerous beasts in those waters.
