Ngorongoro Conservation Area

We only spent a half-day in the Ngorongoro caldera on the way to Serengeti, but WOW was it an incredible day. We saw our first lions within half an hour of descending into the crater.
Flat top Acacia trees on the crater rim. Descending into the crater, there was a layer of clouds over the far rim. Backlit ostrich in front of the crater rim. Buffalo grazing in the morning light. Female ostrich eating.
Ostrich head! A jackal. A pride of lions!! Lioness. Lion tongue!
Sleepy kitteh. The male getting up in the background. Epic. Lion in the grass. Certainly one of my best photos ever. Incredibly lucky to get this shot!!
Sleepy lion. The male walking around again, he has a wound on his haunches. Such a badass. Tongue detail! Lionesses.
Emo lioness. Lazy lions! Just like big housecats. The big male in profile. You can see his wound here as well.
Close up with visible wound. This is how close they were to the trucks!! Far rim with cloud cover. They're like striped donkeys! Zebra close up.
Wildebeest on the move. Wildebeest closeup. They were just nuzzling. Quite close to us! Lonely zebra.
g9/78/587478/3/153284791.hSAlhwfJ.jpg Zebra closeup. A Kori Bustard, heaviest flying bird in the world. Kori Bustard from behind. Grey Crowned Cranes.
Wildebeest in the distance. Hippo pool! Happy hippo. Yawning hippo. g9/78/587478/3/153284801.s5Nyki9Q.jpg
Another Kori Bustard. Kori Bustard. Grazing hippo. Wildebeest herding single file in the distance. Elephants making their way toward us.
And giving themselves a dust bath. Elephant pair. Ostrich and elephant crossing paths. Three species in this shot! Thompson's Gazelle, Wildebeest and Zebra. That's a hyena on the left chasing down some wildebeest.
Hyena. My new look! Saddle-billed stork in flight. Warthog eating. That's a lioness in the grass on the right, a kill on the left, a jackal circling and wildebeest in the background.
Some hyena were waiting for the lioness to walk off. The first lioness moving on. The second starts to leave and the hyena move in from the right. She's not happy with that so she turns around to scare them off. The first lioness moving away in the shimmering heat.
Second lioness starts to move off again and the hyena move in. She turns! Lioness chasing the hyena off. The hyena are booking it now. She continues the pursuit.
She turns after the left one. Continues pursuit. And she finally is satisfied they're far enough away. The jackal watches the scene unfold waiting for his turn. Meanwhile in the shimmering distortion, two Maasai are herding in their cattle in the background.
Wildebeest herding by with thousands of flamingos in the lake behind. A lion in the grass. Our only rhino, a lone Black Rhino far below. Black rhino far below. This was taken from the crater rim which is 2000ft above the floor. A wide shot of the whole caldera.
