Amboseli is famous for two things - elephants and views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Although we saw many elephants, Kilimanjaro never was more than a dim silouette on a hazy horizon.
Amboseli also had some very unique terrain. What at first appeared to be green, grassy fields was really about four feet of marsh water covered by floating vegetation. It was only when an elephant or some other large animal waded through the marsh that the water underneath becomes apparent. The water comes from underground springs that are fed by snow melting off Kilimanjaro.
There were also a large number of vervet monkeys that enjoyed playing hide-an-seek in and around our lodge.
