Images in this gallery were taken on the day crossed over the high elevation (~14,000 feet) Papallacta Pass (pronounced pop-eye-auk-tah) via the old and more scenic highway and headed to our first destination on the eastern slope of the Andes. The habitat and wildlife we encountered here were so unique compared to what we saw on the rest of our trip to Ecuador, we had to create this gallery and include some images. The high elevation habitat is called paramo, and resembles something like alpine tundra.
